In Connection with the tragedy of kanjuruhan, is The Credibility of The Police Should be Questioned?

The stereotype of the Indonesian National Police in the eyes of Indonesian citizens is horrible. Even though the police should be trusted by the community, what happens is that the trust is decreasing day by day. It is not something that happens for no reason. The distrust arises because the police often disappoint the public. Many cases are not thoroughly investigated, sometimes because of bribes. There is a saying, "laws blunt up and sharp down." This is evident because many officials, public figures, or rich people escape punishment because of money. This makes Indonesians look at them full of distrust. Everything they do always seems wrong.

People lose confidence in the police because they are often arbitrary and act rashly in making decisions. One of the examples is the tragedy of Kanjuruhan. Based on information circulating, the incident began when Aremania- the Arema fan club- started taking to the field due to not accepting Arema's loss in the match. They protested with anarchists and caused a commotion. Because too many people had descended, the police seemed to have difficulty dealing with it empty-handed. They sprayed tear gas into the stands, which was an impulsive response. As is known, tear gas spraying has been banned by Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), but for some reason, it is still being sprayed by the police. With that alone, it can be seen that the police are the main cause of this tragedy. That was indeed the spectators who lit up the case, but the tragedy was unlikely to happen if the police did not spray the tear gas. Even if tear gas was needed, it should have been sprayed toward the field where the anarchist fans are, not toward the stands. They are very wrong if they sprayed it on the stands with the excuse that other spectators do not come down. The spray should aim at the field. Otherwise, the spectators will avoid places where there is tear gas. Nevertheless, the action is still wrong and violates the rules. In addition, the club and the organizers are also guilty of not maintaining security and order during the event, and so do the spectators who got chaos. From my perspective, not only the police but the organizer and the club must also share responsibility for this heartbreaking tragedy.

The Divisi Humas Polri’s tweets from 1 October 2022 discuss various cases handled by the police. One of them is the Kanjuruhan tragedy. They offer their condolences to the deceased victims and their families, visit the survivors in the hospital, and provide updates on the actions taken regarding this tragedy and the progress of the investigation of this case. Alongside that, they also posted about their daily activity, such as the Zebra Operation 2022, social assistance, greetings for important days, etc. some cases and news are also posted on that Twitter, such as Brigadier J’s case, they give some updates about the investigation and let the public know about the position of suspect FS and his colleague. Other news and case posted are about the tornado disaster in Ngawi, East Java, and the trading robot net 89. Of course, all of their posts got responses from netizens. But rather than being called a response, they received criticism from netizens. The posts related to Kanjuruhan and Brigadier J tend to get more comments. The average number of comments is in the hundreds. Even one of them got more than 3800 comments. For the other topics, the average gets tens to less than 200 comments. Interestingly, whether in posts about popular cases or ordinary posts, they always get criticism directed at certain cases. Many people said it was just an image, even on social assistance posts. Many of the netizens voiced their concerns in the comment section. They did not even hesitate to reveal that the police couldn't be trusted. However, behind all that, we never know; maybe there will still be a positive side of the police that is not shown to the public.
