What’s Wrong With LQBTQ+ In Qatar?
As we all know, Qatar is
lined up to host the FIFA World Cup 2022. But behind the event’s splendor, there
are many controversies. One of them is the prohibition of all forms of LGBTQ+
symbols. This does not mean banning supporters or members of the LGBTQ+
community from attending matches, but it refers to the attribute that
represents LGBTQ+, such as the rainbow flag. Starting from fans and journalists
who are prohibited from wearing rainbow colors while watching matches.
According to reports, seven national teams were forced to cancel plans to use
the One Love captain's armband, which would have promoted diversity and
inclusion, at the tournament. The reason Qatar is imposing that rule is deemed
to have violated the regulations of the country. As we all know, Qatar is a
very Islamic country. In Qatar, there is a law that mentions LGBTQ+
relationships that are considered as an action that violates Sharia law and
morals. It can result in fines, imprisonment of up to 7 years, or the death
penalty.
There are so many pros
and contra to this issue. Even some football players had a protest about this
rule. Regarding this ban, polemics arose when Germany, Denmark, and England
threatened to leave FIFA if the rules remained unchanged. The German national
team took a hand-covering photo before the match started against Japan on
Wednesday, 23 November 2022. On another side, The England national team flew to
Qatar using a Virgin Atlantic Airbus A350 jet with a rainbow motif, which is a
symbol of LGBT. It is not accidental. The aircraft has been deliberately
chosen. The action of the England national team is a form of resistance
regarding the ban on LGBT at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
In my consideration, the
thing that Qatar does is nothing wrong. Some people may say that we must
respect human rights. Of course, we must. But in this case, the LGBTQ itself
violated the nature of human existence. Because in my religion, men were
created to partner with women, and I'm sure the same is true of other
religions. So, in my perspective, LGBTQ+ is not part of human rights. Many
people said that Qatar is homophobic. It is not really that way. It is just
simply because LGBTQ+ is a deviation.
The society of Qatar is basically
against LGBTQ+. Not just the law, but the citizens. On the contrary, the law
exists because of its people. In Qatar, there is terrible persecution that is
getting worse as the World Cup approaches. And after the World Cup, things will
get considerably worse. There is no protection for the LGBTQ+ community.
They are powerless. But it was their choice not to take the straight way and
live against society. They know that it is very risky but they still live it.
With the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, they might expect that the world would see
them and fight for their rights. But in reality, in addition to increasing
support, hate speech also spread. Even their own country is increasingly
emphasizing the prohibition of LGBTQ+ there. However, Qatar is not prohibited
LGBTQ+ people to see the matches, everyone is welcome. But, do not show that
they are LGBTQ+ because that is not needed and has nothing to do with football.
Once again, Qatar is the
host and they have rights. All participants must respect the rules of the host.
The federation chose Qatar to be the host, they must have discussed this
earlier. Or if it is not, they must have to think about this thing since they
know Qatar is a very Islamic country and they even have a law about it. Even
when FIFA allows the use of LGBTQ+ attributes, they are in a place where LGBTQ+
is prohibited. Where the earth is stepped on there the sky is upheld. If from
the beginning they want to promote LGBTQ+ in this event, do not agree to choose
Qatar to host it.
